Admission and Application Information

Potential applicants are encouraged to correspond with the Director and to visit the campus to discuss their interests and the program with faculty and students.

Students may apply to be admitted for either the fall or spring semesters:

Fall admission: The Museum Studies Faculty Advisory Committee will begin considering applicants on January 1.* The final deadline for the fall semester is April 15. However, applications received by January 1 will receive priority.

Spring admission: The Museum Studies Faculty Advisory Committee will begin considering applicants on August 15.*  The final deadline for the spring semester is October 1. However, applications received by August 15 will receive priority.

*Applicants who submit their applications by the earlier dates will receive priority consideration.

Admission Requirements

  1. A completed application, either on-line or paper (go to https://www.applyweb.com/apply/kugrad/ for on-line applications or http://www.graduate.ku.edu/05-03_paper_app.shtml for paper application).
  2. A non-refundable application fee: $55 paper application; $45 on-line application (http://www.graduate.ku.edu/). Make checks payable to: The University of Kansas.
  3. Two official transcripts from the undergraduate institution you received your degree from and any graduate institution that you have attended.
  4. A statement of your academic objectives. This component of your application is very important. It should be a thoughtful, well-written statement addressing such issues as (a) your reasons for wanting to enter this program, (b) your career goals, (c) relevant background information, (d) the match of the program to your interests, and (e) anything else you think is important to your application. If your performance records are below expectations, provide an explanation of any extenuating circumstances related to this issue.
  5. Three letters of recommendation. (Please use online letter of recommendation system when you apply).
  6. GRE scores. To submit scores to us, use university code 6871, department code 5101.
  7. A resume or curriculum vitae listing history of employment since bachelor's degree, scholarships/ fellowships and awards
  8. A sample of the applicant's written academic work
  9. For international students only, TOEFL scores or acceptable alternative to demonstrate English proficiency.

The student must hold a baccalaureate degree and have accumulated at least a B (3.0) grade-point average in previous academic work to be considered for admission to regular graduate status in the program. In exceptional cases, students with less than a 3.0 grade-point average are admitted to the program on a provisional basis. For further information concerning admission status, see the University's Graduate School Catalog. Acceptance in the program is decided by the Faculty Advisory Committee in consultation with the department responsible for administering the academic track most pertinent to the applicant's career interests.

Financial Assistance

No scholarship or fellowship funds are directly available to the Museum Studies program.  However, many of our students find career-related jobs and paid internships on campus or in nearby communities.
