Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How is KU’s Museum Studies Program ranked nationally?
A: There is no system of national rankings for graduate programs in Museum Studies. Unlike many other programs, KU has a long history of awarding degrees in Museum Studies and a proven track record in placing its graduates. To learn more about why you should choose KU’s MA program in Museum Studies, check out “The KU Advantage.”
Q: What kind of academic background do you look for in applicants to your program?
A: Most successful applicants to our program have the equivalent of at least an undergraduate minor (6 courses) in the Museum Studies “track” discipline in which they want to specialize. We offer tracks in anthropology, biology (natural history), geology, and history. For more information about track requirements, please follow the links.
Q: I’m an art history major who’d like to work in an art museum. Would KU’s Museum Studies Program be a good fit for me?
A: No - we do not offer a track in art or art history. Students who would like to pursue graduate studies in art history at the University of Kansas should consult the website of the Kress Foundation Department of Art History.
Q: What are your GRE score requirements?
A: We don’t have minimum GRE score requirements. We want to admit students who would be a good fit for our program, so we assess each applicant’s file holistically: GRE scores are just one piece of the information we consider.
Q: What size is your program?
A: We try to limit our program to a total enrollment of no more than thirty students. 10 to 15 new students enter the program each year.
Q: How selective is your program?
A: In 2008-2009, we accepted slightly more than half of all our applicants. We admit applicants who will flourish in our academically challenging program.
Q: Can I transfer credits from an MA program at another university toward Museum Studies MA requirements?
A: Under certain circumstances, students can transfer up to 6 hours of appropriate graduate credit toward their Museum Studies MA degree. Courses counted toward the requirements for an undergraduate or graduate degree may not be transferred. For more information about transfer credit, click here.
Q: Can I visit KU if I’m interested in applying to the Museum Studies Program?
A: Absolutely! We’re delighted to talk with prospective students in person. Please contact Professor Marjorie Swann, Director of Museum Studies, if you’d like to schedule a visit ( mswann@ku.edu ).
